2021 CIF-SDS Field Hockey Open Division Champions

The Scripps Ranch High School varsity field hockey team won the 2021 CIF-SDS Field Hockey Open Division Championship title by defeating Torrey Pines High School 1-0 on Nov. 20. Scripps Ranch High has captured the championship in the last three full seasons.

To get to the championship game, Scripps Ranch defeated Cathedral Catholic 8-2 in the first round on Nov. 16, and beat Canyon Crest Academy 2-1 in the semifinal round on Nov. 18 โ€“ all in the same week.

Torrey Pines gave the MaxPreps No. 9 field hockey team, No. 1 in California, all they could handle, but fell 41 seconds short.

Thatโ€™s when Scripps Ranchโ€™s Kelsey McGrattan took a corner kick [sic] from classmate Julianne Sue and rifled it in the Torrey Pines goal for the 1-0 victory Saturday in the San Diego Section Open Division field hockey final at Hilltop High School.

Melanie was also selected by her coaches to receive the CIF Sportsmanship Award, "an honor bestowed upon one member of each team participating in CIF Championship competition in all sports."

The CIF San Diego Section initiated the award program to โ€œsupport the highest ideals of good sportsmanship, fair play and the principles of pursuing victory with honor.โ€ It is intended to recognize an individual that โ€œcompeted all year with dignity, respect for his/her opponents, team and community.โ€
